Crime Fiction IV:
A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000

A Completely Revised and Updated Edition

About Crime Fiction IV

For two decades, Hubin's Crime Fiction Bibliography has been regarded as --  far-and-away -- the definitive reference for detective and mystery book collectors.  This final edition of "Crime Fiction" is the culmination of more than thirty years of bibliographic research into crime (mystery/detective/suspense/spy/thriller) fiction by Allen J. Hubin.

Previous editions of this massive reference work were praised by everyone who reviewed them and were featured on Booklist's list of the Best Books of the 1980s.  Crime Fiction IV has now been expanded and updated through 2000 into five volumes and nearly 110,000 titles.  In Allen's words, "I'm sure this will be the last print edition of my bibliography. I've gone to unusual (some would say crazy!) lengths to make this as accurate and complete as possible. I'll be happy to go into detail on those lengths if anyone wants."

This monumental work lists all mystery, detective, suspense, police and gothic fiction in book form published in the English language in either hardcover or softcover.  Having been universally recognized as a work nonpareil in its extensive coverage of this area, it is without a doubt a "must have" for any collector of mystery and detective fiction.   It is filled with essential referencing including an Author Index, Title Index, Settings Index, Series Index, Series Character Chronology, Film Index, Screenwriters Index, and a Directors Index of 'Crime Fiction,' defined very broadly as fiction intended for adult readers or featuring an adult protagonist and containing crime or the threat of crime as a major plot element.

From the early entries up through Doyle's great Sherlock Holmes ... Biggers'  Charlie Chan ... Charteris'  The Saint ... Christie's Hercule Poirot & Jane Marple ... Fleming's James Bond ... Gardner's Perry Mason ... McNeile's Bulldog Drummond ... Rohmer's Fu Manchu ... Van Dine's Philo Vance and all the many greats .. right up to the year 2000.

Far and away the most comprehensive work of its kind.

Timeline of Previous Editions of Crime Fiction Bibliography

Hubin's Crime Fiction is a thorough and comprehensive bibliographical reference which has been the cornerstone mystery reference and standard for bibliophiles and dealers alike for many years.

1979

The first edition of Allen Hubin's Bibliography of Crime Fiction (1749-1975) hit the shelves at 698 pp.  From the very outset, it became an indispensable key to unlocking the mysteries to the myriad works of Crime Fiction.

1984

The second edition of CRIME FICTION arrived with extensive updates.  This edition extended the first CRIME FICTION five years including 60,000 titles and adding some 6,000 new titles. Of these, there were an additional 2.600 titles discovered for the years 1749-1975.   A new Settings Index debutted identifying 343 locations.

1988

The second edition of CRIME FICTION received a supplementary volume (260 pp.) providing further updates on new releases through 1985.

1994

CRIME FICTION II  (the previous print version of this guide) was released with nearly 1,800 pages of information comprising two volumes, offering exhaustive bibliographic detail and extensive updates through 1990. Two new features emerged -- the first was a roster of more than 4,000 films, including silents and foreign-language movies, based on literary works and listing movie title, studio, year, director, screenwriter, and author; the second -- listings of individual short stories from more than 4,000 story collections.

2000

CRIME FICTION III was issued as a CD-ROM only release -- completely revised and updated from CRIME FICTION II -- and now covering works published through 1995.  By now, over 94,000 detective and mystery novels and collections had been indexed -- by author, title, series character and setting -- with the most recent addition being an index of films derived from the books and stories.

2002

Most recently, a further Revised Edition CD-ROM release updated CRIME FICTION III with some 10,000 additions and corrections.

2003

In December of 2003, CRIME FICTION IV will be released marking the zenith of nearly 30 years of exhaustive research and unparalleled bibliographical zeal -- once again enhancing, updating and improving what has become a work filled with gems of wisdom -- 5 volumes worth --  from a lifetime of dedication to the field of mystery and crime fiction.
